6 Easy Steps to Keep Skin Hydrated & Healthy

Hydration is key for beautiful, youthful-looking skin, but between cold winters, damaging environmental pollutants, busy schedules, a market saturated with harsh products that strip our skin’s natural sebum and disturb the barrier function, it can be a challenge keeping our skin nourished and moisturized. While topical skin care is important, beautiful skin starts from the inside. Here are six easy ways to keep your skin feeling and looking hydrated, healthy, and happy.

1. Eat hydrating foods.

Incorporating hydrating foods into your diet is an easy, tasty way to help your skin retain water and keep its youthful glow. Serums and moisturizers certainly help, but a healthy complexion  starts from the inside out. Healthy fats, like those found in avocados, seeds, and nuts, keep skin soft and supple, while water-rich foods like watermelon, celery, and cucumber increase moisture content. Both celery and cucumber contain silica, a trace mineral that keeps our skin elastic, our nails strong, and our hair silky. For a quick skin-food fix, top your salads with a handful of flaxseeds.

2. Drink up!

Skin care products can certainly help, but without a solid eight glasses of water a day, our skin will be left dull and parched. Start the day right with a cup of warm lemon water; the lemon juice helps detox our bodies while aiding in digestion and hydrating the lymph system to keep us energized. Raw coconut water and green juices are great for midday pick-me-ups, providing vital nutrients while hydrating. Coconut water, in particular, is an ideal post-workout hydrator; high in electrolytes, magnesium, and calcium, coconut water helps our body recover from excess sweating, and the small amount of natural sugar in it helps our muscles heal.

3. Use a pH-balanced gentle cleanser that doesn’t strip the skin.

Many facial soaps and cleansers contain harsh surfactants that strip our skin of its protective oils. Such formulas often have a pH of 8 or higher; these products are too alkaline and disturb skin’s natural balance, making it prone to dryness and irritation. Opt for a gentle, natural cleansing milk, cream, or oil-based formula that is non-foaming and pH-balancing; these will ensure a thorough cleanse without stripping to leave your skin soft.

4. Add back hydration.

It’s important to rehydrate the skin after cleansing. Use a hydrating toner with humectant ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, or aloe vera to allow the skin to better retain water and keep the skin’s protective barrier strong and healthy. Dry skin types will benefit from a gentle, hydrating toner or essence prior to applying serum. In addition to providing hydration, pH balanced toners balance the skin’s pH and prep it for subsequent products, allowing serums and moisturizers to take full effect.

5. Use an antioxidant-rich serum or cream to lock in moisture.

After toning, lock in moisture with a protective, antioxidant-rich serum or cream. For normal to oily skin types, a toner followed by a serum is all you need to hydrate and rejuvenate the skin; dry skin types may opt to follow up with a moisturizer. Their high concentration of active nutrients delivers serious hydration while also protecting: By strengthening the skin’s barrier, the right serums and creams help protect against environmental pollution and UV rays while defending against free radical damage.

6. Protect yourself from the sun.

Even when it’s not beach weather, harmful UV rays affect our skin year-round, depleting it of lubricating, protective oils and inducing free-radical activity, which can lead to wrinkles, discoloration, and irritation. Long-term, unprotected sun exposure can cause permanent changes to the structure of the skin, breaking down connective collagen that keeps our skin firm. Be sure to use a natural, physical sunscreen daily of at least SPF 30 after applying serum.

The secret to radiant, youthful skin is simple: hydration. Highlighters and bronzers may enhance our glow, but moisture can’t be faked. To keep skin healthy and firm, incorporate the above-mentioned tips into your everyday routine; protecting your skin from the sun, adding back moisture, and keeping a balanced, healthy diet are critical not only for your skin but for your overall wellbeing. To naturally and easily maintain your skin’s hydration levels, try our pH-balancing Anarose Hydrating Rose Toner. Providing gentle exfoliation, Anarose soothes dry or irritated skin and preps the skin for subsequent serum and moisturizer use, allowing for better water retention and youthful, glowing skin.
