How To: The "No-Makeup" Makeup Look

Over the years as a freelance makeup artist, I’ve been asked many times to do makeup that looks as if the model isn’t wearing makeup. These days, “no-makeup” makeup is talked about a lot, but the main thing about the look is that it is not about going completely bare. Rather, it is meant to enhance your natural beauty instead of altering it. I chatted with international makeup artist Benjamin Puckey about his tips. Here is our conversation and his step by step guide to achieving that beautiful “you, but better you” look.

Munemi: As a makeup artist, how do you feel about the recent "no-makeup" look trend?

Benjamin: I think this trend is a natural reaction to the overly made up and contoured faces that we've been seeing a lot of lately. The fashion world is always first to pick up on beauty trends which you see in the magazines and at the fashion shows as quite a natural look. I like skin to look as real and healthy as possible and not covered in powder and foundation.

M: Which techniques and products would you suggest to those looking to try the “no-makeup” look?

B: Create a beautiful glowing base by first using MŪN Aknari Brightening Youth Serum and then only applying concealer where necessary. Groom your brows in place with a clear brow gel and fill in any sparse areas with brow powder. Curl your lashes with a lash curler and apply mascara on your top and bottom lashes. Choose a warm beige shadow and apply this with large fluffy brush as a "wash of color" to your lids. For a luminous eye look tap some lip balm on top of the eye shadow. Apply a cream or powder bronzer to your cheeks to warm your complexion and give you a glow followed by strategically placed cream highlighter on the high points of your face and inner corner of your eye. If you want more definition on the eye use a fine liner brush to apply a thin line using a black cream liner just against your top lashes. Keep lips bare with just a balm or apply a light lip stain by tapping a "your lips but better" shade of lip color on your lips.

M: What is your most important tip when going for the “no-makeup” look?

B: Make sure that you create dimension in your makeup with a cream highlighter and mascara and invest in a high quality concealer. When the skin has a gorgeous glow to begin with you're halfway there! Just apply concealer on any imperfections and let your natural skin texture shine! I never like the look of heavy foundation as it makes you look tired and ages you.

As always, any makeup look begins with good skin. Benjamin, myself, and many of our makeup artist colleagues reach for Aknari Brightening Youth Serum to prep the skin. Allure even called MŪN “Backstage Beauty's Secret Weapon.” A face and neck serum, eye treatment, and primer all in one, it's no wonder that so many professional makeup artists rely on its instantly glowing results. Whether you’re going au naturale or getting glammed up, a healthy, radiant complexion and self-confidence are always in!
